Solar Powered Pumps: Know about this solar energy innovations!

Water is one of the most important elements in the existence of living things. Humans, plants and animals need water for survival. But there are places that experiences scarcity in water supply. This leads to the invention of water systems able to supply the needed amount of water like water pumps powered by solar energy.
A pump that is solar powered uses an electric motor for it to function properly. The electricity in the motor is taken from the solar panels. Solar energy is converted into direct –current (DC) electricity. It is advisable to use DC motors since the output on the solar panel is DC and to lessen of other electrical components used. If the pump uses an Alternating-Current (AC) motor, additional components are needed called an inverter. The inverter is responsible for the conversion of the DC electricity from the solar panels to AC electricity.
AC motors has disadvantages so it is common for a solar powered pump to use DC motors.
• AC motors are more complicated to use.
• AC motors costs higher compared to DC motors.
• An AC motors system has lesser efficiency.
Solar powered pumps operate at its best on a sunny climate. This is helpful for cattle because of their high water consumption during hot weather. Water is also needed on cloudy days but it produces lesser amount of energy needed in order for the solar panel to supply electricity on the DC motors. It is best recommended to have a larger storage for water enough for three to four days for solar powered pumps in case there is a sudden change in the weather condition.
There are two kinds of pumping system being used in the solar powered pumps. It is the direct-drive and the battery-operated models. Facilities for storing the water should be incorporated in either of the systems. However water storage area for the systems using batteries could be reduced.
The solar arrays of the system which is direct-drive should match to the required power specifications of the pump to increase its efficiency. The usage of a deep-cycle battery having a good performance in quality for the battery-operated solar powered pumps can add to a better control of electricity such as blocking the diodes and regulator charging for battery protection.
The amount of water a solar powered pump can deliver is basically dependent on the pumps configurations.
- The distance of the water from the main source to its reservoir.
- The distance and the sizes of the pipes where the water has to pass through.
- The pumps quality and efficiency.
- The power availability on the system. Power panels can be added for more energy source.
Solar powered pumps are beneficial so it is important that its maintenance is well cared for. Solar powered pumps are simple and durable. Its systems are easily to use and can be installed upon purchase.
However, the parts should be given proper care. Regular inspection is needed if in case the system is located in areas easily contaminated by dusts. Soft cloth and water could be used for cleaning the panels. The specified amount of inspection depends on the time of the water storage on the reservoir. Take for instance, if the water supply is only good for three days, then after three days the system should be checked for any irregularities.
